Fixed Mobile Convergence

Fixed Mobile Convergence

One business number, every device, every location

📲 Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) is a Cloud PBX feature that links a single business phone number to several devices at once: desk phone, mobile, and computer. A call to that number rings all of them together. You answer on whichever device is nearest.

How It Works

💡 In short: one number rings on every device you own, and the first one you pick up takes the call.

1️⃣ Caller dials one number

A client calls your business DID. They use only one number to reach you.

2️⃣ PBX rings every device

Desk phone, mobile app, and desktop softphone all ring at the same time.

3️⃣ First answer wins

The device you pick up takes the call. All the other devices stop ringing instantly.

4️⃣ Hand off mid-call

Move a live call from mobile to desk phone without the caller hearing a break.
📲 What FMC unlocks: one number on business cards, calls follow you anywhere, personal mobile stays hidden, and no missed calls when you leave your desk.

Types of FMC Ringing

Providers implement FMC in different ways. Confirm which mode your provider uses before signing a contract, as it changes how calls feel to both caller and staff.

📞 Simultaneous ring

All devices ring at once. Fastest pickup time, best for small teams and solo lines.

🔁 Sequential ring

Devices ring in order: desk first, then mobile, then fallback. More control, slower.

⏱️ Delayed ring

Mobile rings only after desk goes unanswered for a few seconds. Reduces phone noise.

🎯 Presence-based ring

Only available devices ring. Busy, away, or offline devices are skipped automatically.

What to Look For

🎯 Simultaneous or sequential

Confirm whether the provider rings devices together or in sequence. Simultaneous is faster for solo lines; sequential suits structured desk-first teams.

🔋 Mobile app reliability

FMC depends on the mobile app. Test push notifications, battery drain, and call quality on both Wi-Fi and mobile data before rollout.

⚖️ Mid-call hand-off

The ability to move a live call from mobile to desk without disconnecting the caller. Not every provider supports this. Verify on paper and in practice.

📦 Cross-border coverage

For teams working across LU, BE, DE, and FR, confirm FMC works in every country without roaming fees on the app itself or extra licence charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Does FMC work when I am abroad?
Yes, as long as you have an internet connection. FMC runs through a VoIP app, which uses data rather than a local SIM. When travelling in the EU, your roaming data allowance typically covers it. On Wi-Fi, there is no data cost at all. The caller still sees your Luxembourg business number.
❓ Will my personal mobile number be visible to callers?
No. When you make or receive calls through the FMC app, the caller sees your business number. Your personal mobile number is never disclosed. This is one of the main reasons businesses adopt FMC for staff who work from personal phones rather than company-issued devices.
❓ What happens if I do not answer on any device?
The call follows your standard handling rule: voicemail, a colleague's extension, or an auto-attendant. These rules are set once in the Cloud PBX dashboard and apply to all devices registered under your number. You can change them without IT support.
❓ Can I use FMC on a tablet or computer as well as a phone?
Yes. Most providers offer apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS, plus browser-based softphones. You can register as many devices as the provider allows under your profile. All registered devices ring at the same time when your number receives a call.
❓ Is Fixed Mobile Convergence the same as call forwarding?
No. Forwarding redirects a call from one number to another, usually in sequence. FMC rings multiple devices registered to the same number at the same time. Also, forwarded outbound calls show the forwarding number; FMC outbound calls always show the original business number, regardless of device.
